Since I can remember I’ve loved illustrations, which can take us into the world of fairytales, and while looking at yarns or different fabrics – I saw the toys that can be made from them. When my two daughters were little, I sewed for them. Little rompers or funny, happy creatures. With the time passing, my kids grew older and my world remained without a recipient. It led me to a point, when I just took a crochet and created a collection of natural toys and stuffed animals.
I wanted to combine traditional technique with a simple, unique design in such a way that children could play with toys from a little-forgotten world today.
The collection includes circuses that spread out in towns, balloons controlled by a clown in a cylinder or a dog in a pilot’s cap, a funfair with colorful flags and a race car reminiscent of the first racing cars on the tracks or in the merry square town. In the children’s room an old street lamp can light up and from different houses you can build entire streets with an old windmill looking over them.
This world has its own citizens: a wolf, who wanted to have a red sweater so that there would no longer be no need to tell the story about a red hood; a rat who by numerous travels by boat has become accustomed to its striped T-shirt, or a fox that sticks its nose out of the house and does not always tell the truth. There’s also little kitty that does not catch mice anymore, because it dreams about becoming a tightrope walker…
These toys can also be pillows and children can rest on them. They can lie in a crib or on the floor, where you can create a small town to play with.
The windmill and the clock are moving toys. The windmill’s wings can be turned and in the clock there are two separate faces, one for the longer and one for the shorter hand with which you can set the time. The whole movable construction is made of yarn, so it does not contain any hard elements.
All toys and stuffed animals are handmade in Poland, by ladies who for many years have been involved in creating beautiful crochet products according to traditional designs. Now they have done a great job to adapt their skills to the spatial forms of Hoa & Moa toys. And it is not very easy. Each character has its facial expressions that must be felt and reflected in the toy. This is achieved thanks to the artistic and technical skills of knitters who take care of every little detail. This, however, is reflected in the time needed for the creation. For example, the making of one animal character takes from three to four days.
